- Yanira Doyle found herself in “a dinghy with a hole” when the real estate crisis hit her neighborhood./ Ruth Morris
Yanira Doyle was a first-time home buyer. She bought what she could afford, put all her savings on the table, and threw a house-warming party.
But within months, the real estate crisis was crashing around her. She had bought in a building that was recently converted to condominiums– a detail that suddenly made her much more vulnerable to falling property prices. Most of the other owners were investors. They were more likely to foreclose, or walk away. Yanira had bought her place to live there.
This story follows her struggle to keep the building afloat as trash went uncollected and lock boxes multiplied on the railing outside. She swept the halls and pestered the management company.
And she made it her mantra: “I pay my mortgage.”

Good for you, Yanira! Your story is inspiring! Hope all will be well!
Yanira,
I listened to your story this morning and was really moved. You, like myself and so many others, did not take risks, you worked hard, played by the rules, paid your morgage faithfully, you took a stake in the dream of home ownership bought a home and not an investment, but are getting hurt by the people & developers in this city who were only in it for the money and took absurd risks.
I know it’s a difficult pill to swallow, but I want you to know that you are being supported by people whose names you don’t even know, and being tested in ways that will serve you throughout your entire life. Your mother sounds like an incredible woman and she shared valuable wisdom that is worth far more than anything material in this world..
May you find the courage and strength to weather this storm, and may you be rewarded with lessons that will serve well you for the rest of your life. Never forget that when you do the right thing, the universe will always provide.
All the very best to you and thank you for being such an inspiring and decent human being.
Yanira,
You are what all homeowners should be, honest, hard working and standing to your values! Keep the good fight and God Bless You! Things will turn around for you! Thank you for sharing your story.
Bail out the people, not the banks.
