Mitchell Kaplan interviews Edwidge Danticat.

Edwidge Danticat, 40, has become the latest local talent to win the prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” which carries a heavy dose of prestige and a $500,000 “no strings attached” prize.
Danticat  was one of 24 winners named this year as a fellowship winner. Other winners included Jill Seaman of Sudan, an infectious-disease specialist, Lynsey Addario of Turkey, a photojournalist, and Peter Huybers of Massachusetts, a climate scientist at Harvard.
We celebrate by rebroadcasting Under the Sun’s recent interview with Danticat, which we recorded during the production of a show dedicated exclusively to South Florida’s literary talent.  Mitchell Kaplan, owner of Books & Books, talked to Danticat about her memoir, Brother, I’m Dying, and about her life in Haiti, New York, and Miami.
Also, check out the full article on Danticat’s win, and how she learned the good news!

Why We're Telling These Stories

From Abe Rich's nephew...

On behalf of my family, friends and those that were close to my Uncle - thank you! It is truly a treasure to have the piece recorded and available for us and future generations to cherish. The story really captures his character, persona and spirit. Abe was a simple man, a man who struggled to survive during a tragic era in our history. His traumas and survival instinct kept him alive in Europe, Israel and in Miami as he worked till he could no longer stand up. As it said on his shop wall... "There is no substitute for hard work." I believe you and everyone at WLRN work very hard to provide us with wonderful programming and go above and beyond your call of duty. Thank you very much.
