In honor of the Miami Book Fair International, WLRN is rebroadcasting our Literary South Florida episode Sunday night at 7.  The episode is jam-packed: two “MacArthur Genuises,” the creator of the “Dexter” character, aspiring poets and some talented and unpublished local writers.  You can listen on WLRN 91.3 or WKWM 91.5 (in the Keys).

The Book Fair begins this Sunday and runs through Sunday, Nov. 15.  The Street Fair and Festival of Authors take place Friday, Nov. 13 through Sunday, Nov. 15.   The Book Fair is now a prime national literary event.  The weekend of the Festival and Street Fair, you won’t be able to hurl a copy of Twilight without hitting an author.  (However, Stephanie Meyer will not be among them.)

Some of the authors from our Literary South Florida episode will be presenting at the Book Fair:

Jeff Lindsay presents the newest book in his “Dexter” series, Dexter by Design.  The best-selling author speaks on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 11 am (Auditorium Pavilion A), along with Paul Levine and Law & Order’s Richard Belzer.

Elaine Viets will speak at the Mystery Writers of America panel on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3:30 pm (Room 7174/7175)  Viets is the author of the Dead-End Jobs series and the Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper series.

Local poet, FIU professor and MacArthur Fellowship winner Campbell McGrath reads from his newest work, Shannon: A Poem of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.  He reads with fellow poets Joy Harjo, Tom Healy and Marie Ponsot at 3:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 14 (Auditorium Pavilion B).

The Miami Poetry Collective will give their first public performance at the Book Fair on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 4:30 pm (Pavilion C).  They will read “20 poems (and a love song) for Miami– “a series of interlocking poems inspired by Campbell McGrath’s “Silt, CO.”

You can also commission your own poem from the Miami Poetry Collective or pick up a copy of their budget-priced 3-Cent Journal at their Street Fair booth.

Why We're Telling These Stories

From Abe Rich's nephew...

On behalf of my family, friends and those that were close to my Uncle - thank you! It is truly a treasure to have the piece recorded and available for us and future generations to cherish. The story really captures his character, persona and spirit. Abe was a simple man, a man who struggled to survive during a tragic era in our history. His traumas and survival instinct kept him alive in Europe, Israel and in Miami as he worked till he could no longer stand up. As it said on his shop wall... "There is no substitute for hard work." I believe you and everyone at WLRN work very hard to provide us with wonderful programming and go above and beyond your call of duty. Thank you very much.
