South Florida Photo of the Week 11/24/09

We invited Caroline Lamarre to share her photos of Sleepless Night with us for this week’s SFPOW post.  Lamarre is a regular on our Under the Sun Flickr group (which is open to everyone’s photo contributions).  She also compiles the I Heart Miami event blog and keeps her own regularly updated Flickr page.

Here are Caroline’s pictures and words:

November 7th, 2009. 6 pm to 7 am. 13 hours to roam from South Beach to Normandy Isle experiencing do-it-yourself art, flamenco dancing, Spam Allstars and 130  more free events!

The night started for my group at 10 pm aboard the free shuttle heading to The Gansevoort Hotel.

Insomniac dreams came true with free coffee and ice cream at the Cafe Bustelo Lounge.

We headed up to Plunge to partake in the “Paint-it-Yourself” event.  If it wasn’t for the tempestuous wind, Picasso-like masterpieces would be on display in the upcoming Art Basel.

Our next item on the schedule was local Afro-funk group,Spam Allstars.  The band managed to draw a large dancing crowd on the 20th Street Beach, despite sand in everyone’s mouth and hair.

Shaking the sand off, we headed for the South Beach late-night standard, Pizza Rustica on Lincoln Road.  On a normal Saturday night, Lincoln Road is hustling and bustling.  Multiply that by about four.  Claustrophobia.  Yes.  Leave without pizza. Never.

2 am. My bed is calling me.  Battling with my head on how many more events there are to see, I give in.  I can be sleepless next year!!

Why We're Telling These Stories

From Abe Rich's nephew...

On behalf of my family, friends and those that were close to my Uncle - thank you! It is truly a treasure to have the piece recorded and available for us and future generations to cherish. The story really captures his character, persona and spirit. Abe was a simple man, a man who struggled to survive during a tragic era in our history. His traumas and survival instinct kept him alive in Europe, Israel and in Miami as he worked till he could no longer stand up. As it said on his shop wall... "There is no substitute for hard work." I believe you and everyone at WLRN work very hard to provide us with wonderful programming and go above and beyond your call of duty. Thank you very much.
