I heard Que Pasa USA? this afternoon and fell in love with it. While I’m not from a Latin family, half my friends are from Cuban families and Sargalski made me laugh as she showed the world the slice of South Florida that I know and love. The mixture of TV audio clips, interviews and her moderation struck the perfect chord and created a very lovely radio novela. Congratulations.
Favorite Episode: When the kids are not allowed to speak English at home and are left alone with the grandparents. A repairman (and others) come to the house, but the kids refuse to help out because they are not allowed to speak English-can totally relate!!
Sara,
I love that episode too! That repairman was Manny Mendoza, who ended teaching sociology to many of us Miami Dade students. He was always very proud of his work as a producer with Que Pasa, U.S.A.?
My family and I moved here from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the early 80′s. My sister’s best friend in Rio was from a Cuban family, so she had some exposure to being around Cubans. But I can say that once we moved to South Florida, Que Pasa USA, quickly became not only our favorite show on TV, but looking back, now I realize that much of what I learned about life in South Florida and the culture of Miami, came from that show! Now we are fluent in Spanish, but at the time, we did not speak Spanish. It was such a clever show and so ingeniously written, that I do believe it helped us learn Spanish. We felt such a connection with the characters and stories on that show!Just recently I had my 10 year old niece watch some episodes and we were all laughing! It is TIMELESS….It IS Miami in all its colors and flavors! Que Pasa USA will forever be in my heart!! MIL GRACIAS!
P.S. Thank you Under The Sun for airing the story on WLRN! I was so moved and even gasped when I heard that the final episode had aired 30 years ago! OMG….do I feel old!
