Episode 4

Continuing our mission to tell the stories of South Florida, we’ve collected more local voices and experiences into Episode 4 of Under the Sun.

In “Second(hand) Chances,” learn about a thrift store in Wynwood that not only gives discarded and slightly used items a second chance, but also gives women down on their luck another chance at life.  Producer Kenny Malone gives a woman’s life story a second chance as he pieces together the tale behind an unclaimed box of salt shakers Listen to what Malone discovered, and perhaps more importantly, how much of her story was lost.

Have you filled out your Census form yet?  Did you know which box to check  for “ethnicity”? To learn a little more about what’s behind descriptions like “Hispanic” or “Latino,” listen to Dan Grech’s interview with demographer Maria Aysa.

Trina Sargalski delivers a “Letter from West Kendall” about growing up with the television show Que Pasa, U.S.A.? and learning to love her hometown.  In Miami Beach, Yanira Doyle refused to give up on her condo, even when everyone else foreclosed or moved out of her  building.  She was  “Under Water, but Undeterred.”

For this episode’s “All in a Day’s Work” segment, we find out what it’s like to be a mermaid and retro-tainer.  And finally, we find out the answer to one of your burning questions in “What’s up with South Florida?” when Sammy Mack talks to carpet salesman Don Bailey about his iconic ads along the I-95.

Chickens, mermaids, strange people, suburban West Kendall, folks down on their luck… South Florida can be downright wacky, beautiful, or even annoying.  But it’s ours.   Listen to some of the stories that emerge from our unique home under the sun (in player at top of post).

We are currently working on a special hour about how the earthquake in Haiti is affecting life in South Florida.

Why We're Telling These Stories

From Abe Rich's nephew...

On behalf of my family, friends and those that were close to my Uncle - thank you! It is truly a treasure to have the piece recorded and available for us and future generations to cherish. The story really captures his character, persona and spirit. Abe was a simple man, a man who struggled to survive during a tragic era in our history. His traumas and survival instinct kept him alive in Europe, Israel and in Miami as he worked till he could no longer stand up. As it said on his shop wall... "There is no substitute for hard work." I believe you and everyone at WLRN work very hard to provide us with wonderful programming and go above and beyond your call of duty. Thank you very much.
