The Spam Allstars are about as Miami as you can get, says Kenny Malone. Their music fuses electronica from South Beach, funk from Overtown and hot salsa rhythms from Little Havana. (They also provide the theme music for our show!)

But the group plays to a large international audience too, and is the subject of a documentary by David Orth called Fuacata!, featured in the Miami International Film Festival this year.

As Malone reports, the film traces the group’s roots to an off-beat South Beach pirate radio show and jam sessions organized by Andrew Yeomanson, also known as DJ Le Spam.

Today of course the Spam Allstars are the kings of live music on Calle Ocho, where they own Thursday nights at the club Hoy Como Ayer.

Why We're Telling These Stories

From Abe Rich's nephew...

On behalf of my family, friends and those that were close to my Uncle - thank you! It is truly a treasure to have the piece recorded and available for us and future generations to cherish. The story really captures his character, persona and spirit. Abe was a simple man, a man who struggled to survive during a tragic era in our history. His traumas and survival instinct kept him alive in Europe, Israel and in Miami as he worked till he could no longer stand up. As it said on his shop wall... "There is no substitute for hard work." I believe you and everyone at WLRN work very hard to provide us with wonderful programming and go above and beyond your call of duty. Thank you very much.
