On Saturday, the South Florida Society of Professional Journalists gave our Under the Sun website top honors.  Under the Sun won in the category of best blog affiliated with a  media outlet in Florida.   Congratulations to web editors Trina Sargalski and Ruth Morris, to co-senior producer Dan Grech, who oversees the website, and to website producers David Samayoa and Trina Sargalski.

Under the Sun’s Ruth Morris also won first place for continuous coverage in radio for her story “Under Water, but Undeterred.” The piece is about a woman who is the last remaining resident of her condo building.  Yanira Doyle is determined to take care of her condo even as investors foreclose around her, leaving behind a barely maintained building.  Dan Grech and Alicia Zuckerman edited the story.  Kenny Malone helped with the story as well.

“Second(hand) Chances” by Alicia Zuckerman and “Velvet Rope” by Kenny Malone and Trina Sargalski earned second and third place awards for radio feature reporting.

Why We're Telling These Stories

From Abe Rich's nephew...

On behalf of my family, friends and those that were close to my Uncle - thank you! It is truly a treasure to have the piece recorded and available for us and future generations to cherish. The story really captures his character, persona and spirit. Abe was a simple man, a man who struggled to survive during a tragic era in our history. His traumas and survival instinct kept him alive in Europe, Israel and in Miami as he worked till he could no longer stand up. As it said on his shop wall... "There is no substitute for hard work." I believe you and everyone at WLRN work very hard to provide us with wonderful programming and go above and beyond your call of duty. Thank you very much.
