WILBUR AWARD
Religion Communicators Council has presented Wilbur Awards annually since 1949. They honor excellence by individuals in secular media – print and online journalism, book publishing, broadcasting, and motion pictures – in communicating religious issues, values and themes. Winners receive a stained-glass trophy. The award is named for the late Marvin C. Wilbur, a pioneer in religious public relations and longtime council leader.

1st Place: WLRN Radio/ZG Public Media; Trina Sargalski, Ruth Morris, Alicia Zuckerman and Dan Grech; Under the Sun.
As an online supplement to the well-produced and interesting radio stories, Under the Sun does a good job of using the online medium. Judges wanted to see stronger photography (yes we know it’s a radio program), but liked the animation that accompanied Velvet Rope.
FEATURE REPORTING – RADIO
2nd Place: WLRN Radio/ZG Public Media; Alicia Zuckerman and Dan Grech; Under the Sun, Second(hand) Chances.
This is a moving feature about women with multiple convictions for drugs and prostitution who have been able to turn their lives around through the efforts of Heather Klinker, who runs a thrift store and charity to benefit women like them. It stands out because it shows how and why Klinker started these efforts. Sound bites from the former addicts are especially strong and tell the story better than anyone else could.
