Brooks Rumenik is the director of the Office of Safe Schools at the Florida Department of Education in Tallahassee. The office is responsible for state-level oversight and support in the areas of substance abuse and violence prevention for students in kindergarten through 12the grade and data collection efforts for school-wide discipline and climate. Rumenik serves as a liaison for citizens, parents and students who have questions about discipline and safety in schools.
Fifty years ago, North Miami Senior High School students lived in neighborhoods where most kept their doors unlocked at night. Today, many say they feel unsafe in their school and their neighborhoods. Past and present students share their varied experiences of going to school and growing up in North Miami.
High school is hard enough already. Imagine facing a foreign language, culture, and school system. Haitian students at Boyd Anderson High in Lauderdale Lakes paired up with new arrivals after the earthquake to help ease their way. We are playing stories to commemorate the one year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti throughout the month of January. Listen to the story here.
